IT outsourcing is an increasingly common strategy that enterprises choose to increase flexibility and gain cost management advantages, ideally without compromising the quality of service. However, there are software asset management implications that enterprises should understand before choosing IT outsourcing . First and foremost, while responsibility for managing software assets may be shifted to the outsourcer – the liability for license non-compliance if that company gets audited, generally does not. In most cases, the enterprise still owns the software licenses and bears the license compliance risk. This can create some natural tensions between the enterprise and IT outsourcer.
